Description:

Fundamentals and Technology of Combustion contains brief descriptions of combustion fundamental processes, followed by an extensive survey of the combustion research technology. Not like the other book before, it also includes mathematical combustion modeling of the processes covering mainly premixed and diffusion flames, where many chemical and physical processes compete in complex ways, for both laminar and turbulent flows. The combustion chemistry models that validate experimental data for different fuels are sufficiently accurate to allow confident predictions of the flame characteristics. This illustrates a unique bridge between combustion fundamentals and combustion technology, which provides a valuable technical reference for many engineers and scientists.

Moreover, the book gives the reader sufficient background of basic engineering sciences such as chemistry, thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics. The combustion research and mathematical models fit between small-scale laboratory burner flames, and large-scale industrial boilers, furnaces and combustion chambers. The materials have been collected from previous relevant research and some selected papers of the authors and co-workers, which have been presented mainly in different refereed journals, international conferences and symposia, thus providing a comprehensive collection.

Thermodynamics and Introductory Statistical Mechanics covers the necessary mathematical tools and computational techniques for understanding both, first providing a separate overview of each and then illustrating and exploring the connections between the two.

Placing equal emphasis on fundamentals and applications, this clear and insightful text covers:

  • Thermodynamics__basic concepts and definitions, laws, general conditions for equilibrium and stability, phase and chemical equilibria
  • Introductory statistical mechanics__principles, thermodynamic connection, molecular partition function, statistical mechanical applications
  • Mathematical techniques for highlighting exact and inexact differentials, partial derivatives, Caratheodory’ s theorem, Legendre transformation, and combinatory analysi

Description:

Fundamentals and Applications discusses the fundamentals and applications of statistical thermodynamics which is addressed for beginning graduate students in the engineering sciences. Building on the Maxwell-Boltzmann method of step-by-step development of the subject, this book makes few presumptions concerning students, previous exposure to statistics, quantum mechanics or spectroscopy. The book begins with the fundamentals of statistical thermodynamics, pauses to recover needed knowledge from quantum mechanics and spectroscopy, and then moves on to applications involving ideal gases, the solid state and radiation.

A full introduction to kinetic theory is provided, including its applications to transport phenomena and chemical kinetics. Modern applications, such as laser-based diagnostics, are also discussed. Each chapter is carefully written to address student difficulties in learning this challenging subject, which is fundamental to combustion, propulsion, transport phenomena, spectroscopic measurements and nanotechnology. Students are made comfortable with their new knowledge by the inclusion of both example and prompted homework problems.

Description:

Thermodynamics: Fundamentals for Applications is a text for a first graduate course in chemical engineering. The focus is on macroscopic thermodynamics; discussions of modeling and molecular situations are integrated throughout. Underpinning this text is the knowledge that while thermodynamics describes natural phenomena, those descriptions are the products of creative, systematic minds. Nature unfolds without reference to human concepts of energy, entropy, or EXERGY. Natural complexity can be organized and studied by thermodynamics methodology. The power of thermodynamics can be used to advantage if the fundamentals are understood. This text's emphasis is on fundamentals rather than modeling. Knowledge of the basics will enhance the ability to combine them with models when applying thermodynamics to practical situations.

While the goal of an engineering education is to teach effective problem solving, this text never forgets the delight of discovery, the satisfaction of grasping intricate concepts, and the stimulation of the scholarly atmosphere.

Description:

Industry relies heavily on the combustion process. The already high demand for energy, primarily from combustion, is expected to continue to rapidly increase. Yet, the information is scattered and incomplete, with very little attention paid to the overall combustion system. Designed for practicing engineers, Heat Transfer in Industrial Combustion eclipses the extant literature with an emphasis on the aspects of heat transfer that directly apply to industry.
From a practical point of view, the editor organizes relevant papers into a single, coherent resource. The book encompasses heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics, including the little-covered subjects of the use of oxygen to enhance combustion and flame impingement. Maximizing applications and minimizing theory, it covers modes of heat transfer, computer modeling, heat transfer from flame impingement, from burners, low temperature, high temperature, and advanced applications, and more.
The theoretical focus of most literature has created a clear need for a practical treatment of the heat transfer as it applies to industrial combustion systems. With detailed coverage and extensive references, Heat Transfer in Industrial Combustion fills this void.
Designed for practicing engineers, Heat Transfer in Industrial Combustion eclipses the extant literature with an emphasis on the aspects of heat transfer that directly apply to industry.

The Principles of Hydraulic System Design, Peter J. Chapple book is structured so as to give an understanding of: The basic types of components and their operational principles. The way in which circuits can be arranged using available components to provide a range of functional outputs. . The analytical methods that are used in system design and performance prediction. Fluid power systems are manufactured by many organisations for a very wide range of applications, which often embody differing arrangements of components to fulfil a given task. Hydraulic components are manufactured to provide the control functions required for the operation of systems, each manufacturer using different approaches in the design of components of any given type. As a consequence, the resulting proliferation of both components and systems can, to the uninitiated, be an obstacle to the understanding of their principle of operation. Components are arranged to provide various generic circuits, which can be used in the design of systems so as to suit the functional characteristics of the particular application in engineering design.

Description:
This Schaum's Outline Series Theory and Problems of Machine Design book is primarily useful as a course of clearly examples of various aspects of machine design with completely 320 worked out solutions plus additional solved and unsolved problems to help you get through a class in machine design or to help you review if you haven't touched the subject in a while. It could never stand alone as a tutorial in this subject due to the broad amount of background material. The author takes note of this by providing a mechanics review quiz for the student at the beginning of the outline. It is suggested if the student does not score over 90% that he/she should review the necessary background material before attempting to proceed. The outline then manages to touch on every aspect of machine design in a detailed fashion.
The book is completed with a chapter of additional subjects, because after all, the goal of a machine designer is not about design only or analyze shaft gears, couplings and brakes, but to take this knowledge and design an entire mechanical system. The first few projects cue you with select proper and suitable materials, but next projects provides the problem statement and allow the reader to construct the project as he/she sees fit. Among the projects are a water level automatic control, one man passenger elevator, and a lawn mower. Some of the names of these projects really show the book's age, but they are still useful exercises that predicted the student's ability to learning about machine design. It is a kindly very old book, but the laws of physics haven't changed in 30 years, so it is still a useful Schaum's outline. For better grades in courses covering machine design you can't do better than this Schaum's Outline.
This book which underlying in machine design contains college-level mathematics formulas such as trigonometry, calculus, ODE and physics, is based on principal kinematics, statics, dynamics, strength of materials, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics theory. Thus, this book is really a kind of practical reference for mechanical engineers.

Review quote

Henry Ford claimed to have invented nothing new but simply to have combined the discoveries of others. Similarly, modern designers of complex devices, even those as innovative as the Segway, rely on earlier designers for many of the basic elements in the new device. The trick is to be aware of these earlier designs. Sourcebooks such as Parmley's are a primary source of such information. It is the latest in a line extending at least from Ramelli in the 16th century through Henry T. Brown's 1868 Five Hundred and Seven Mechanical Movements... (many reprint eds.); Mechanisms and Mechanical Devices Sourcebook, comp. by Nicholas P. Chironis (CH, Mar'92); Preben W. Jensen's Classical and Modern Mechanisms for Engineers and Inventors (1991); and Parmley's own more quantitative and analytical Illustrated Sourcebook of Mechanical Components (2000). Here Parmley, a registered professional engineer, reproduces more than 1,500 clearly diagrammed, ingenious and practical mechanisms selected from specialist engineering journals. He divides them into three categories: assemblies (to minimize vibration, limit torque and/or overloading); power transmission (gear systems, clutches, chains, belts, shafts); and individual components.

Description :
Structural analysis is usually carried out by a strength-of-materials approach that allows complex 3-D structures to be modeled adequately for design needs in a single dimension. However, this approach is not extensively used in geo-technical engineering, partly because 3-D media (soil, rock) are present, but more importantly because until recently the methods necessary to carry out this form of analysis did not exist.

In the last ten years efforts at modeling practical problems in foundation analysis using a strength-of-materials approach have developed the concept of the conical bar or beam as a tool. Such cone models can be used to model a foundation in a dynamic soil-structure interaction analysis with a variation of the properties with depth.

This book develops this new approach from scratch in a readable and accessible manner. A systematic evaluation for a wide range of actual sites demonstrates sufficient engineering accuracy. A short computer program written in MATLAB and a user-friendly executable program are provided, while practical examples ensure a clear understanding of the topic.

Incorporates a chapter on Finite Elements, and problems including Matlab and Mathcad problems. An application of vibration analysis is in engineering design. Design principles are developed using analysis of model one-degree-of-freedom systems. Design applications are presented for multi-degree-of-freedom systems and continuous systems. Many examples and homework problems have a design flavor.
This book is intended as a text in a junior or senior level undergraduate course in vibrations. It could be used in a course populated by both undergraduate and beginning graduate students. The prerequisites for such a course should include courses in statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, and mathematics through differential equations. Some material usually covered in a fluid mechanics course is used, but this material can be omitted without loss of continuity.
An overview of the modeling procedure is presented in Chapter 1 (This material can be omitted if students have background in system dynamics).

Two methods of dynamic analysis are presented and used throughout the book. The free-body diagram method is based on D'Alembert's principle. An energy method that includes the effect of nonconservative forces is presented as an alternative and is preferred in modeling multi-degree-of-freedom systems.
An application of vibration analysis is in engineering design.

Finite Element Analysis is an analytical engineering tool developed in the 1960's by the Aerospace and nuclear power industries to find usable, approximate solutions to problems with many complex variables.

The Finite Element Method In Engineering book is an extension of derivative and integral calculus, and uses very large matrix arrays and mesh diagrams to calculate stress points, movement of loads and forces, and other basic physical behaviors. Students will find in this textbook a thorough grounding of the mathematical principles underlying the popular, analytical methods for setting up a finite element solution based on those mathematical equations. It quickly bridges that knowledge to a host of real-world applications--from structural design, to problems in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.

Professional engineers will benefit from the introduction to the many useful applications of finite element analysis, and will gain a better understanding of its limitations and special uses. New to this edition: – New sections added on the assemblage of element equations, and an important new comparison between finite element analysis and other analytical methods?showing advantages and disadvantages of each – Updated solutions manual available – Improved sample and end-of-chapter problems. It quickly bridges that knowledge to a host of real-world applications--from structural design, to problems in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics

Description

Heat transfer is the area of engineering science which describes the energy transport between material bodies due to a difference in temperature. The three different modes of heat transport are conduction, convection and radiation. In most problems, these three modes exist simultaneously. However, the significance of these modes depends on the problems studied and often, insignificant modes are neglected.

Very often books published on Computational Fluid Dynamics using the Finite Element Method give very little or no significance to thermal or heat transfer problems. From the research point of view, it is important to explain the handling of various types of heat transfer problems with different types of complex boundary conditions. Problems with slow fluid motion and heat transfer can be difficult problems to handle. Therefore, the complexity of combined fluid flow and heat transfer problems should not be underestimated and should be dealt with carefully.

This book:

  • Is ideal for teaching senior undergraduates the fundamentals of how to use the Finite Element Method to solve heat transfer and fluid dynamics problems
  • Explains how to solve various heat transfer problems with different types of boundary conditions
  • Uses recent computational methods and codes to handle complex fluid motion and heat transfer problems
  • Includes a large number of examples and exercises on heat transfer problems

In an era of parallel computing, computational efficiency and easy to handle codes play a major part. Bearing all these points in mind, the topics covered on combined flow and heat transfer in this book will be an asset for practising engineers and postgraduate students. Other topics of interest for the heat transfer community, such as heat exchangers and radiation heat transfer, are also included.
